Sometimes, and Often Not the Ticket You Think
Many Sintra tours include a Pena ticket, but in 2026 that can be the park-only ticket (terraces and gardens, no main palace rooms) or the Essential Visit with the palace interior. Quinta da Regaleira is the ticket most often left out, and almost no tour includes Pena's restored Private Apartments. "Guided" usually means guided outside: guides may not stop inside Pena and can't guide inside Regaleira's palace or well. So read the option name, not the headline. One of the few tours with the palace interior in its from-price is Inside Lisbon's small-group Sintra, Cascais and Pena Palace tour, from $55 and rated 4.8/5 from 3,242 reviews, with Pena Park and Palace admission included.
This happens at Pena's gate every day. A traveller books a well-reviewed day tour "with Pena Palace ticket", climbs through the park, admires the yellow turrets from the terraces, and then finds out their ticket ends there. Nothing was hidden, exactly. The listing said "Pena Park" in an option they skimmed past.
Sintra's ticketing got more complicated in 2026. Pena now sells five palace visits, Regaleira is run by a different organisation with its own timed slots, and tour listings mix ticketed and unticketed options under the same headline. This guide decodes it all, so you know what you're paying for before you pay.
What Tickets Could a Sintra Tour Include?
These are the official tickets a tour might include, from the cheapest to the most expensive, with adult prices from the official sites.
| Site and ticket | Adult price | What you get | Usually on tours? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pena: Visit to the Park | €12 | The park, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the palace terraces; no state rooms in the New Palace | Common (often called "exteriors" or "park") |
| Pena: Essential Visit | €20 | The New Palace interior (timed slot), the terraces and the whole park | Common on the better tours |
| Pena: Full Tour (Complete Visit) | €45 | Everything, including the restored Private Apartments | Almost never |
| Pena: Guided Visit or Theatrical Visit | €75 / €95 | Parques de Sintra's own 90-minute guided or theatrical visits | Never as standard |
| Quinta da Regaleira | €20 | Palace, chapel, gardens, the Initiation Well and tunnels (timed slot) | Often optional or excluded |
| Moorish Castle | €12 | The ramparts | Rarely (a drive-past or an extra) |
| National Palace of Sintra: Essential Visit | €13 | The palace in the town centre | Rarely |
| Monserrate: Park and Palace | €12 | The palace and the botanical park | Rarely (extra fee) |
| Cabo da Roca viewpoint | Free | The cliff-top cape and its monument | Always "included" |
| Cabo da Roca lighthouse: Essential or Panoramic Visit | €5 / €10 | The interpretation centre, or the balcony climb (opened July 2026) | Not on tours yet |
Prices from Parques de Sintra and Quinta da Regaleira, checked October 2026; inclusions from a survey of around 20 GetYourGuide and Viator listings in the same month. Every Pena option, with opening times and slot rules, is in our Pena Palace tickets guide for 2026.
How to Decode Sintra Tour Listing Language
This is the table to keep open while you compare tours. Match the wording on any listing to what it usually means in 2026.
| Wording on the listing | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| "Pena Palace ticket included" | Could be the park-only ticket or the Essential Visit. Check the option name. |
| "Pena Park only", "Exteriors", "exterior and gardens" | The park-only ticket: terraces, gardens and the Chalet. No main palace rooms. |
| "Interior and exterior", "Full ticket" | Usually the Essential Visit with the New Palace interior, not the Private Apartments |
| "Full access" | Ambiguous. On ticket products it can mean the Full Tour with the Private Apartments; on tours it often just means the Essential Visit. |
| "Pena Park, no ticket" | You reach the park area but may not even enter the terraces |
| "Tickets (if option selected)", "Entrance fees" | Whether tickets are included depends entirely on the option you pick |
| "Optional, Extra fee" in the itinerary | You pay, often in cash to the guide on the day |
| "Tickets bought with the help of your guide" | Bought on the day, subject to availability. Interior slots may be sold out. |
| "Skip-the-line" | Skips the ticket office only, not the palace queue and not your timed slot |
| "Guided visit to Pena Palace" | The guide talks outside; inside is a one-way route where guides may not stop |
| "Guide inside the monuments" | At Regaleira, external guides can't guide inside the palace or the well |
| "Ticket non-refundable after purchase" | The operator has bought a timed slot, so free cancellation may not cover the ticket part of the price |
A simple rule: if no option mentions "interior", "palace" (as opposed to park) or "Essential", assume you won't go inside the main palace rooms.
Other Sintra Experiences You Might Enjoy
Besides the classic day tours, travellers book Pena Palace entry tickets on their own, a half-day Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira tour with timed slots, a tuk-tuk ride through Sintra's hills to the Moorish Castle, or a full day out to Cabo da Roca and Cascais. Browse the live options below.
What "Guided" Really Means Inside Pena and Regaleira
Pena Palace
Under Parques de Sintra's rules for professional guides, guides may not stop along the palace visiting route. Groups of more than 10 must use radio headsets indoors, and group sizes are capped. In practice your guide explains Pena outside, and then you walk a one-way interior route where staff keep the line moving. Some operators say it plainly: the Pena, Moorish Castle and Regaleira tour by BMW or VW (5.0/5 from 523 reviews) tells guests its guide talks them through the gardens and won't enter the rooms, and some tuk-tuk operators say guides can't go inside with you at all.
For a genuinely guided interior, only Parques de Sintra's own Guided Visit does that: about 90 minutes with an official guide, €75 for an adult.
Parques de Sintra published updated terms for guides that take effect on 22 October 2026, so check whether the no-stopping rule has changed before you book a guide for the interior.
Quinta da Regaleira
Fundação Cultursintra, which runs Regaleira, says in its visiting rules that external guides may not lead tours inside the palace or the Initiation Well. Your guide can talk in the gardens, but the palace and the well are a self-guided, one-way route, and you can only walk down the well, not back up it.
More on the well, the tunnels and how the timed slots work in our Quinta da Regaleira and Initiation Well guide.
Does Including Tickets Make a Tour More Expensive?
Yes, and you pay for the tickets either way. What you're choosing is who buys them and when.
- The cheapest "from" prices almost always mean no tickets, or park-only. The most-reviewed Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais day starts at $27, and its listing says entrance tickets come only with the options that include them.
- Options with the Pena interior and Regaleira cost noticeably more.
- Private tours with both tickets included sit at the top of the price range.
- Ticket-only resellers add a premium over the official face value.
Is it cheaper to buy the tickets yourself?
At face value, always. The official Pena and Regaleira websites are the cheapest source. Before you decide, weigh three things:
- Pena interior and Regaleira slots sell out in high season, roughly Easter to October. Operators that help you buy on the day can't guarantee availability; park-only tickets are usually still available. Odyssey Tours' Sintra, Pena, Regaleira and Cascais day (4.8/5 from 12,423 reviews) says exactly this on its listing: on the transport-only option your guide helps you buy tickets, subject to availability, and Pena interior and Regaleira tickets can't be guaranteed.
- Pena allows no lateness. Miss your palace slot and you get no entry and no refund. A tour that holds a confirmed slot and gets you there on time is buying you security, not a discount.
- Cash-on-the-day prices on listings are often out of date. Stas Tours' half-day Pena and Regaleira tour ($88, 4.9/5 from 1,343 reviews) still lists the Pena terraces ticket at €10, while Parques de Sintra charges €12 for the park ticket. Expect to pay the current official price, whatever the listing says.
Our view: in busy months, pay for a tour with confirmed, timed tickets. A tour that will "buy on the day" leaves you with the same sell-out risk at a higher price. What every Sintra tour costs, with and without tickets, is in our Sintra tour price comparison.

What Happens If a Palace Is Closed on Your Tour Day?
Closures happen. In the last two years Sintra's hill monuments closed for Storm Kristin (January to February 2026), bad weather (June 2026), a fire-risk alert (July 2026) and repeated fire-risk days in summer 2025.
- Most tours substitute instead of cancelling. A typical small-group policy reads: if Pena or Regaleira is closed, "alternative sites will be visited, such as the National Palace of Sintra and the Palace of Queluz." The small-group Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais tour by van (4.8/5 from 2,246 reviews) visits another palace on days when Pena closes.
- Parques de Sintra offers rescheduling or refunds for closure days through an official form. In February 2026 it also honoured Pena tickets at the National Palace of Sintra and Queluz.
- Regaleira refunds only for unscheduled closures.
Ask your operator in writing: if a substitute site is visited, is the ticket part of the price refunded? The months with the most closures are covered in our guide to the best time to visit Sintra.
Which Kinds of Tour Include Which Tickets
Full-day combos: Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais
The most likely to sell several ticket options under one headline. The headline price usually excludes tickets or includes park-only. The Sintra, Pena, Cascais and Cabo day tour with tickets ($76, 4.9/5 from 1,954 reviews) includes Pena entry with a guided visit, which ticket depending on the option you choose. Every combo is compared in Sintra, Cascais and Cabo da Roca in one day.
Small-group and private tours
The most likely to include genuine interior slots, although some still collect cash on the day. Ó Turista's half-day Sintra tour ($95, 4.9/5 from 261 reviews) puts the Pena Essential ticket, palace interior and park, in the price. For private tours, see our private Sintra tour guide.
Tuk-tuk, jeep and e-bike tours
Almost never include palace interiors. They're transport and viewpoints, with Pena marked "extra fee". The private tuk-tuk tour around Sintra (4.9/5 from 94 reviews) is a typical example: palace tickets aren't included.
Ticket and tuk-tuk bundles
Handy, but check that your drop-off time matches your palace slot. Reviewers report being dropped off an hour early.
Sintra Tours That Include Palace Entry
Ratings and review counts as shown on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Open the booking options before you pay: the ticket wording on each option is what you get.
The palace interior in the price
Inside Lisbon's small-group tour is the one we'd compare first. Admission to Pena Park and Palace is in the $55 from-price, the vans seat eight, and the day carries on to Cabo da Roca and Cascais. Its listing shows the contradiction this page warns about: "guided visit inside the Pena Palace" under the inclusions and "guided tours at the monuments" under the exclusions, so expect most of the commentary outside. With only a morning to spare, Ó Turista's half-day tour costs $40 more and includes the Essential ticket, a pastry stop in town and a five-minute photo stop outside Regaleira; its shared option doesn't go inside Regaleira.
Pena and Regaleira on one booking
Tugatrips' Sintra, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira tour (from $58, 4.7/5 from 2,610 reviews) sells options with Pena "full access or exterior only" and a guided Regaleira entry with the Initiation Well; pick the option that names both. If you'd like the coast as well, the Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais day (from $27, 4.7/5 from 24,792 reviews) adds both palace tickets on its ticket options. Its from-price is the transport-only option.
Just the Pena ticket
Travelling by train? The Pena Palace and Park entrance ticket (4.3/5 from 22,119 reviews) covers the park, the palace and the Chalet, with an audio guide app. Its skip-the-line part skips the ticket office only. Our Lisbon to Sintra train guide shows how to time the trip to your slot.
The Private Apartments
No tour we checked includes them. Buy the Full Tour (€45) directly from Parques de Sintra at parquesdesintra.pt and pair it with a transport-only tour, or with the train.
9 Questions to Ask Before You Book a Sintra Tour
Which exact Pena ticket?
Park only, the Essential Visit or the Full Tour? Is it in the price or collected in cash?

Regaleira has its own timed slots, separate from Pena's.
Is the Pena park shuttle included, or will we walk?
The walk from the park gate is steep; allow about 30 minutes.
Will the guide come inside?
At Pena guides can't stop on the route; at Regaleira they can't guide inside.
What happens if Pena closes?
Is there a substitute site, and is the ticket part refunded?
Do child, youth and senior prices match the official discounts?

Can I change the ticket option after booking?
Some listings say no.
How to read a GetYourGuide Sintra listing in two minutes
- Open the booking options first. Option names such as "Exterior Pena Palace" and "Full Pena Palace" tell you more than the headline.
- Compare "Includes" with the itinerary. "Optional, Extra fee" or "Admission ticket not included" next to a stop overrides a vague headline.
- Read "Know before you go". That's where cash collection, fixed slots and non-refundable tickets are mentioned.
- Search the reviews for ticket, inside, cash and gardens.
Red flags
- The headline says "with Pena Palace" but no option mentions interior, palace or Essential.
- Cash collected at pickup for tickets, especially at out-of-date prices.
- "Skip-the-line" described as skipping the interior queue.
- A "guided tour inside Pena" promised for a large group.
- Contradictions: tickets listed under "Includes" but "Extra fee" in the itinerary.
More booking checks, from meeting points to cancellation terms, are in what to know before booking a Sintra tour.

Palace Entry on Sintra Tours: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Sintra day tours include Pena Palace entry?
Some do, but often only the park and terraces ticket. Check that the option you book says "interior", "palace" or "Essential Visit". Since April 2026 the park-only ticket and the palace ticket have been separate products.
Does the Pena park ticket let you go inside the palace?
No. The park ticket covers the park, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the palace terraces, but not the state rooms of the New Palace.
Is it cheaper to buy Sintra palace tickets yourself?
Yes, at face value. The official Parques de Sintra and Quinta da Regaleira websites are the cheapest source. In high season, though, timed slots can sell out, and a tour holding confirmed tickets removes that risk.
Can tour guides go inside Pena Palace?
Guides can enter but may not stop along the visiting route under Parques de Sintra's rules, so the interior is effectively self-guided. Only Parques de Sintra's own Guided Visit is fully guided indoors.
Can a guide explain Quinta da Regaleira's Initiation Well?
Not inside. Regaleira's visiting rules don't allow external guides to lead tours inside the palace or the Initiation Well. Your guide can talk to you in the gardens.
Do any Sintra tours include the Private Apartments at Pena?
Almost none as standard. The restored Private Apartments are only on Pena's Full Tour, Guided Visit and Theatrical Visit. You can buy the Full Tour (€45) from Parques de Sintra and pair it with a tour, or upgrade on the day if slots remain.
What does skip-the-line mean at Pena Palace?
It usually means skipping the ticket office, not the queue at the palace entrance and not your timed slot. You still have to get up the hill to the palace.
What if Pena Palace is closed on my tour day?
Most operators visit an alternative site, often the National Palace of Sintra or the Palace of Queluz. Parques de Sintra refunds or reschedules tickets for closure days through its official form.
Is Cabo da Roca free on tours?
Yes, the viewpoint is free. Only the lighthouse visit, opened to the public in July 2026, is ticketed, and tours don't usually include it.
Is the Pena park shuttle included in tours?
Rarely. The shuttle from the park gate to the palace costs €4.50 and you can add it when you buy your Pena ticket. It helps if you can't manage the steep climb of about 30 minutes.
