Pena Palace Tickets & Prices: The Complete 2026 Buying Guide

The official 2026 adult ticket is €20 for Park + Palace and €12 for Park-only — and, contrary to older blogs, there's no longer an online discount. Here's exactly what to buy, how timed entry works, where to buy safely, and when to book.

The short version

What to Buy, and Why Online Still Wins

Pena Palace is sold as two self-guided tickets from Parques de Sintra: Park + Palace ("Essential Visit") at €20 adult, which carries a mandatory timed slot for the interior, and Park-only at €12 adult, which covers the gardens, the Chalet and the palace terraces but not the state rooms. Buy directly at parquesdesintra.pt — or from a named reseller like GetYourGuide if you want free cancellation.

The most important 2026 update: there is no longer an online-versus-gate price discount. The "15% off online" you'll still see quoted is outdated — online and gate prices are identical. You buy online to skip the ticket-office queue, lock a timed slot and keep free rescheduling within a year, not to save money. In peak season, popular morning interior slots (roughly 10:00–12:00) sell out several days ahead, and weekends can sell out up to a week out — so book early.

Buy this

  • Park + Palace (€20) if you want the interior state rooms
  • Park-only (€12) if you're there for the terraces, photos and gardens
  • A first-slot or after-16:00 interior time to dodge crowds
  • The €4.50 shuttle if anyone can't manage the uphill walk
  • A free-cancellation reseller ticket if your plans might change

Avoid this

  • Believing the outdated "15% online discount"
  • Buying Park-only when you wanted the interior
  • A ticket with no dated, timed palace interior slot
  • Lookalike "official" sites and tuk-tuk "skip-the-line" touts
  • Machine/gate tickets if you might need to reschedule (they can't be)
Worth adding to your itinerary

Other Sintra Experiences You Might Enjoy

If sorting your own timed ticket sounds fiddly, a guided tour does it for you. Travellers often book a full-day Sintra tour from Lisbon that bundles Pena Palace entry with Quinta da Regaleira and the Moorish Castle, a half-day Pena Palace trip with tickets included, or a small-group run out to Cabo da Roca and Cascais. 2026 official prices

The Complete 2026 Price Breakdown

Both core tickets are managed by Parques de Sintra. Reduced rates cover youths (6–17) and seniors (65+); under-6s are free but still need a booked ticket.

Ticket Adult (18–64) Youth & senior Family (2 + 2)
Park + Palace ("Essential Visit") €20 €18 €65
Park only ("Visit to the Park") €12 €10 €40

Add-ons and premium official experiences

  • Shuttle transfer (round trip, park gate ↔ palace, ages 6+): €4.50 — add it at checkout, as card payment isn't taken at the stop.
  • Guided visit to the palace: €75 adult / €67.50 youth & senior.
  • Theatrical visit: €150 adult / €135 senior / €20 youth.
  • "Feel Sintra: Royal Palaces" bundle (Pena Essential Visit + National Palace of Sintra + 24-hour 434/435 transport): €42.

The Park + Palace ticket also includes the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the terraces; the Park-only ticket includes the gardens, the Chalet and (since late 2023) the terraces, but not the interior.

Pricing caveat: several aggregator pages still quote "€14 Park+Palace / €7.50 Park-only" for 2026. Those figures are outdated — the current official prices are €20 and €12.

What's real, and what stacks

Discounts on Pena Palace Tickets

Only the multi-site combo is designed to stack; the in-person discounts can't be combined with a pre-booked online slot.

Online advance

No price saving

In 2026 the online price equals the gate price. The official advantage is convenience — no ticket-office queue — not a discount.

Multi-site combo

5–10% stacked

Buy two or more Parques de Sintra sites in one transaction: 5% for 2, rising to 10% for 6. This is the one discount that combines with others.

Portugal residents

Free Sun & holidays

Free entry for residents of Portugal, in person only on the day, with a Citizen Card — you take the first available palace slot, so arrive early.

Lisboa Card

~10%, claimed on site

Roughly 10% off (not free entry), applied at the ticket office — which conflicts with pre-booking a specific online slot.

Accessibility

50% + free companion

A 50% reduction for visitors with a disability at Pena, and no charge for one accompanying person.

Students

No general discount

There's no student rate; the youth price is for ages 6–17 only. Academic work can get free access with prior authorization.

How timed entry works

The Timed-Entry System, Explained

The time on your ticket is the palace interior entry time — the park itself is never timed.

Booking horizon

Ticket sales open 90 days before your visit date. Every Pena ticket needs a chosen date; Park + Palace also needs an interior time slot.

30-minute slots

The interior is sold in 30-minute windows, each admitting a limited number of visitors (firsthand reports put it around 275–300 per slot).

No tolerance

Miss your slot and you can't enter and get no refund. You also can't enter the interior early — though the untimed park is open to explore.

Mind the walk

After the park gate it's about a 30-minute uphill walk (or the €4.50 shuttle) to the interior entrance — budget for it against your slot.

Free rescheduling

Online tickets can change date/time up to 6 pm the day before, within 365 days. Tickets from offices or machines can't be changed.

Otherwise non-refundable

Official tickets aren't refundable except when the monument closes for reasons within Parques de Sintra's responsibility.

Skip-the-line, fast-track and where to buy

Skip-the-Line vs Fast-Track — and Buying Safely

The standard online ticket is the main skip-the-line. A separate paid fast-track only adds priority at the interior entrance.

The standard online timed ticket already lets you bypass the ticket-office queue — where walk-up visitors can wait up to three hours for a slot — and go straight to the entrance. A separate official "fast-track" gets you escorted priority into the interior circuit, but only 25 fast-track entries are reserved per 30-minute slot, and Parques de Sintra sells it only through partners (Blueticket, Headout, Tiqets, GetYourGuide), not on its own main checkout.

Official site vs resellers

  • parquesdesintra.pt (official): same price as the gate, mandatory date/time, free reschedule within a year — but non-refundable and a checkout some find clunky.
  • GetYourGuide / Tiqets / Headout (authorised resellers): prices comparable to official; the draw is flexibility, with GetYourGuide typically offering free cancellation up to 24 hours. Worth it if you value flexible cancellation, want transport bundled, or official slots are sold out.
  • Street/tuk-tuk touts and lookalike websites: the real risk — "official"-sounding domains adding fees, and "palace is full, come with me" pitches. The only official domain is parquesdesintra.pt.

Bundles worth it — and not

Combined and Bundle Tickets

Official multi-site combos save 5–10%; anything pairing Pena with Regaleira is a reseller package, since Regaleira is privately run.

Most logical pairing

Pena + Moorish Castle

Both are Parques de Sintra sites, ~10–15 minutes apart on the same hill. Buy them together for the 5% multi-site discount (Moorish Castle adult €12).

Official bundle

Feel Sintra: Royal Palaces

Pena + the National Palace of Sintra + 24-hour 434/435 transport for €42 — a tidy option if you're also doing the town palace.

Reseller only

Pena + Regaleira

There's no official combo because Regaleira is privately managed. Third-party bundles (Tiqets, Headout, GetYourGuide) exist; the value is convenience and locking two high-demand slots in one booking.

Step by step

Buying Online on the Official Site

The whole process on parquesdesintra.pt takes a few minutes — here's the order it happens in.

  1. Open the Pena listing

Go to parquesdesintra.pt, open "Park and National Palace of Pena," then "Buy ticket" (checkout runs on bilheteira.parquesdesintra.pt).

  2. Choose your ticket

Pick Park + Palace (€20) or Park only (€12), and add the €4.50 shuttle now if you want it — it can't be added later at the stop for card payment.

  3. Pick date and time slot

For Park + Palace, select your date and then a 30-minute interior slot. Prioritise an early or after-16:00 slot to dodge the 11:00–15:00 crush.

  4. Add quantities and pay

Set quantities by category (have proof of age ready for reduced tiers), enter details and pay by card (no Amex). You get an e-ticket by email straight away.

  5. At the monument

Show the QR/barcode on your phone or printed. Present it at the park gate (Porta Férrea), then again at the interior entrance at your slot time.

By season

When to Book, and the Flexible Alternative

Because online tickets reschedule free within a year, booking early is low-risk — and if you want cancellation cover, a reseller bundle is the flexible play.

Peak & weekends

Book 1–2 weeks ahead

July–August and weekends year-round: popular 10:00–12:00 slots sell out several days out, and weekends up to a week ahead. Book as early as you can.

Shoulder season

Several days ahead

April–June and September–October: book several days to a week ahead for a preferred morning or late-afternoon slot; midweek is markedly quieter.

Low season

2–3 days ahead

November–March weekdays: 2–3 days is usually enough, though buying the day before still saves you the ticket-office queue.

Plans might change? Book the free-cancellation version through a reseller instead of the non-refundable official ticket — the flexibility is what you're paying the small premium for. This full-day option from Lisbon includes your Pena entry and cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.

Common questions

Pena Palace Tickets: Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an online discount for Pena Palace tickets in 2026?

No. In 2026 the official online price equals the gate price — the widely repeated "15% online discount" is outdated. The real reasons to book online are skipping the ticket-office queue, guaranteeing a timed interior slot, and free rescheduling within 365 days, not saving money.

Do Pena Palace tickets include the palace interior?

Only the €20 Park + Palace ("Essential Visit") ticket includes the interior state rooms, and it carries a mandatory 30-minute timed slot. The €12 Park-only ticket covers the gardens, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the palace terraces — but not the interior — and you cannot upgrade at the door to a sold-out interior slot.

What is the difference between skip-the-line and fast-track at Pena Palace?

The standard online timed ticket already skips the ticket-office queue — that is the main "skip-the-line". A separate paid "fast-track" only adds priority at the interior entrance and is sold through partners such as GetYourGuide, Tiqets and Headout, not on the main official site; only 25 fast-track entries are reserved per 30-minute slot. Most visitors don't need it outside peak midday in July–August.

Can you buy Pena Palace tickets at the gate?

Yes, but it's risky. Walk-up buyers can wait up to three hours for a timed interior slot, popular morning slots often sell out days ahead, and tickets bought at the ticket office or machines cannot be rescheduled. Buying online in advance is strongly recommended.
